It all started with a hoodie I made for myself with my art on it. After seeing the result, the idea of creating a clothing brand came into my mind. This happened at a moment in my life when I was deeply unfulfilled with my job as a software engineer and was looking for something else.

At the beginning the direction was not clear, but with time the fog started to disappear. I wanted to make something that I was passionate about and aligned with my view of the world — something with soul.

गति (Gati): Movement. Path. Progress toward the ultimate destination.

— Sanskrit tradition (Bhagavad Gita & Upanishads).

Drawing inspiration from some of my interests — movement in all sorts of forms (acrobatics, handstands, dance, yoga…) and ornamental drawing — helped me narrow it down; the pillars became clear:

  • Freedom of Movement Clothing must be comfortable and allow full movement freedom. Why would you wear something that feels tight or restricts your range of motion? It makes 0 sense to me, personally. Clothing should be stylish, but function comes first.
  • Natural Fabrics I don’t like the feeling of synthetic materials on my skin plus they are unhealthy and they stink. I want to always use natural fibers whenever it’s possible — a low % of elastane in some critical parts should be fine.
  • Minimalism I like having only what I need and avoiding clutter. I want clothing that feels good to move in but that I can also wear in everyday life. I like simplicity; I prefer having 3 pairs of pants instead of 12. I want my clothing to have good engineering on what is critical and discard what doesn’t serve. Clothing garments should not be the protagonist; they should support who wears them.

From that first hoodie also came the blend: movement and art. Both are ways of expression, and movement can also be seen as a form of art. Bridging the two, Gati is building garments that allow you to:

move to express
